Esther A. Spomer, 99, of Hermiston, Oregon, died on Saturday, February 28th, 2009 at Good Shepherd Medical Center in Hermiston.

Esther Alberta Spomer was born January 24th, 1910, in Macon, Franklin County, Nebraska. Her parents were Ludwig and Ankea (Harms) Kostbahn. Her father was a Lutheran Pastor in Macon. After completing grade school in Macon, Esther went to a Lutheran boarding high school in Hebron, Nebraska. She had always enjoyed school and was able to develop her singing talents. She joined a Glee Club, chorus and quartets. She has continued to enjoy singing throughout her lifetime. Esther attended one year at Fort Hays College, Kansas. She took a year off to teach at a country school before returning to finish a second year of college. It was at this time that her father was assigned to a Lutheran church in Alexander, Kansas.

Esther met William Spomer, a young dentist, in her church and they were married, July 12th, 1930. In 1932 their first son, William A. Spomer Jr. was born. The young family lived through the Dust Bowl and the depression. When World War II began, William enlisted as a dentist. Esther and young son William moved with Dr. Spomer to his assignments. During this time their second son, John, was born in Dalhart, Texas. There were times when Esther was all alone with the two boys while Dr. Spomer had to go out on Air Force assignments. After the war they moved to McCracken, Kansas. The family's final move was to Larned, Kansas in 1952, her home for 40 happy years. Both sons followed their father into the medical field, William became a physician and John became a dentist.

Esther always kept busy. She also enjoyed helping catalogue items that were donated to the Sante Fe Trail Center in Larned. Esther loved crossword puzzles, she was an avid reader and a fine quilter. In July 2001, Esther decided to move to Hermiston to be near her family. She attended Trinity Lutheran Church and was a member of P.E.O. Her last home was at Rose Arbor Assisted Living.
