Faye
Mostrom
May 13, 1933 – February 8, 2025
Florence "Faye" Mostrom, 91, passed away February 8, 2025, at Hodgeman County Health Center, Jetmore, Kansas. She was born on May 13, 1933 at her family's home in Shiley Township in northwest Pawnee County, Kansas, the daughter of Frank and Gladys (Monroe) Schadel.
Some of her favorite times were growing up with her many cousins who all lived close to each other north of Burdett. She loved her little one room school (Lanark). Her father died when she was just eight years old. She and her mother moved into Alexander, Kansas, in time for her to attend high school there, and she graduated in 1951.
Faye married Arthur Mostrom on August 17, 1952 at Alexander, Kansas. He preceded her in death on May 8, 2013. They lived their first year near Garfield, Kansas, then spent the next nine in the Kit Carson, Colorado, area. This was where their first four children were born. In 1963, they returned to Pawnee County and made their home in Burdett, Kansas, where they lived from then on. They added one more child to their family in 1971. Faye loved her husband's family and their spouses as much as she loved her own.
Faye grew up in the R.L.D.S. Church in Alexander. In 1989, she and Art joined the Rozel Baptist Church. She was a stay-at-home wife and mother for many years and eventually went to work in the kitchen at the Movin' On Inn Restaurant in Burdett. Faye did many different jobs to help make ends meet – ironing, babysitting and cleaning to name a few. She cleaned the Raymond Bauer Insurance Office for over 50 years. The job she loved the most was that of a paraprofessional, primarily at Pawnee Heights Grade School and Junior High. She truly enjoyed helping the students with their various projects.
She worked beside her husband in his garden and canned and froze a good deal of produce over the years. One story was about making some chokecherry jelly and giving a jar to a local bachelor. The next year, he brought a bucket of chokecherries to her and asked if she'd make him some more, and she did. She had a passion for genealogy and was a very good researcher in the days before computers and internet.
In their retirement, she and Art traveled to all four corners of the United States – visiting an old Navy buddy in Seattle, going to Niagara Falls for their 40 th wedding anniversary, visiting Art's brother in Florida, and visiting historic sites across the American Southwest. No one could travel on a budget like Art and Faye.
Faye was an attentive mother, always making sure her kids were clean and neat whenever they went out. She was a den mother and helped her children with their many 4-H projects over the years, teaching them to do their best to do a good job in whatever they did.
Survivors include: a son, Leonard Mostrom (Kathy) of Burdett; four daughters – Virginia Umberger (Kenny) of Colby, Kansas; Margaret Selfridge (Tyler) of Burdett; Janette Friesen (Danny) of Meade, Kansas; and Kenna Mostrom of Abilene, Kansas. Twelve grandchildren – Justin, Debra, Katherine, Brandi, Joshua, Levi, Sarah, Allison, William, Kalyn, Kyel and Kendra; ten great grandchildren – Ian, Addie, Grace, Savana, Faith, Mason, Kaydance, Charlie, Henry and Cora; and two great great grandchildren – Lainey and Oaklynn.
Faye was preceded in death by her husband, her parents and a grandson (Baby Boy Umberger), and her five brothers and sisters and their spouses.
