Obituary

Larned - Garry Gibson of Larned, Kansas, passed away, leaving behind a legacy of compassion, creativity, and humor that touched countless lives.

Garry is survived by his loving wife, Diana Gibson of Larned, Kansas; his daughter, Shari Abbey and her husband, Dwight, of Augusta, Kansas; and his son, Drew Gibson of Larned, Kansas. He was a proud grandfather to Colten Abbey and his wife, Melissa, and Keegan Abbey and his wife, Maddie. He was also a cherished great-grandfather to Micaela, Emersyn, Milena, and Benjamin.

He is also survived by his sister, Mary Michel of Wichita, Kansas, and his nieces, Tricia Thompson, Tanya Remple, and Debra Koppes.

He was preceded in death by his parents, John P. and Blanch Ione Gardner Gibson.

Garry devoted his professional life to helping others. He worked as a social worker at Larned State Hospital for more than 30 years and later served as a mental health therapist at Iroquois Mental Health Center for 20 years. His dedication, kindness, and genuine concern for others left a lasting impression on colleagues, clients, and the community he served.

Outside of his career, Garry was known for his endless curiosity and creative spirit. An artist at heart, he enjoyed transforming odd pieces of metal into one-of-a-kind works of art. He was always finding new projects to pursue and hobbies to enjoy, including furniture refinishing, collecting antiques, reading, privy digging, and creating various forms of metal art. He had a remarkable ability to see potential and beauty in things others might overlook.

Garry will be fondly remembered for his sense of humor, inventive mind, and the many crazy ideas that kept family and friends entertained. Whether he was searching for hidden treasures, immersed in a good book, working on an art project, or sharing a laugh with those around him, Garry brought his unique personality and creativity to everything he did.

His legacy lives on through the family he loved, the people he helped throughout his career, and the many memories he leaves behind. He will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by all who knew him.

A Celebration of Life honoring Garry will be held Thursday, July 9, 2026 from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at the old 4-H building in Schack-Lowery Park, 128 Carroll Ave. Larned, Kansas 67550.
