Obituary

Dr. Gary Alan Murphy, 80 passed away November 25, 2024 in his hometown of Larned, Kansas.

He was born May 8, 1944, in Great Bend, the son of J.D. Murphy and Laurine M. Wittig Murphy-Lenard.  After graduating from Larned High School, Gary received his Doctor of Dental Surgery from the University of Missouri Kansas City.  Following graduation, he served as a Captain in the United States Army and eventually opened his own practice in Federal Way, Washington.  Gary retired from his dental practice in Washington and returned to Larned in 2021.

He enjoyed many activities throughout his life including, golfing, running, scuba diving, traveling, competitive shooting, and hunting.  Gary was also an accomplished artist.  While he was best known for designing and crafting his own masterpieces in many different media, his passion was blown glass.  He also enjoyed photography, pottery, drawing and painting.

Survivors include: one son, Ryan Murphy, Ocala, Florida, and stepson, Andy Murphy, Ellensburg, Washington; three sisters, Janice Roth, Inverness, Florida, Jeanne (Jim) Reynolds, Lansdowne, Virginia, and Joni Turner, Larned; and two brothers, John Murphy, Hutchinson, and Greg (Marilyn) Murphy, Olathe.

Funeral service will be at 10 am Tuesday, December 3, 2024 at Beckwith Mortuary, Larned with Greg Murphy presiding.  Burial will be in the Larned Cemetery.
