LARNED - Gladys "Jewel" Schartz, 75, died Aug. 25th, 2007, at her home in Larned.
She was born July 12, 1932, at St. John, Kansas, the daughter of Chester S. and Nellie G. Hockensmith George. She was a lifetime area resident, farmer, and church organist for the United Methodist Church and Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Larned.
She was a member of the Larned United Methodist Church, Parish Board member, Pawnee County Red Cross Blood Drive Chairman, Santa Fe Trail Center volunteer, Larned Garden Club, St. Joseph Memorial Hospital Auxiliary, all of Larned, Zook EHU, Master Gardener, and Daughters of the American Revolution. She was very active in updating Larned City Cemetery records, and enjoyed playing the organ at the Larned Healthcare Center.
On January 29, 1951, she married Charles "Omar" Schartz at Larned. He survives.
Other survivors include: two sons, Anthony Schartz, Amarillo, Texas, James Schartz, Abilene, Kansas; four daughters, Sharon Garman, Rogers, Arkansas, Susan Rankin, Olathe, Kansas, Cynthia Potter, Olathe, Kansas, Carolyn Bahr, Shawnee Mission, Kansas, a brother, Chester A. George, West Chester, Pennsylvania; three sisters, Clara Link, Uniontown, Pennsylvania, Geneva George, Indianapolis, Indiana, Beverly Hungate, Great Bend, Kansas; 13 grandchildren, and 8 great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a sister, Ella Mae Nightengale.
An Open House Celebration of Jewel's life will be held from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. Tuesday, August 28th at the Larned United Methodist Church Fellowship Hall.
