Joan K. (Clover) Coughlin, 105, a resident of the Parsons Presbyterian Manor, died there at 2:36 P.M. Tuesday, March 1, 2016.
She was born October 8, 1910, at Enid, Oklahoma to John R. and Nancy (Carpenter) Clover. Her great grandfather, another John R. Clover, was considered the founder of Oswego, Kansas. Her parents moved from Oswego to Enid shortly after their marriage in 1901.
Joan grew up in Enid and graduated from Enid High School. In 1931 she graduated from the University of Oklahoma, where she became a member of Pi Beta Sorority. She taught school for 10 years and on October 8, 1942, she married an army doctor named Samuel T. Coughlin.
They lived in Larned for a number of years and in 1950 they adopted four orphaned Polish children whose parents had died in an auto accident. In 1969 they moved to Knoxville, Iowa where Dr. Coughlin was on the staff of the Veterans Administration Hospital. Fifteen years later they retired to Stillwater, Oklahoma and lived there until moving to Parsons in 1994. Dr. Coughlin prededed her in death on August 31, 1995.
Joan was a member of St. Patrick's Catholic, Chapter BS of the P.E.O. Sisterhood, the Daughters of the Confederacy and the Oklahoma Retired Teachers Association.
Surviving are three children, Sophia Zetmeir, of Parsons, Joseph J. Coughlin (Maria) and George P. Coughlin (Mary Jo), of Kansas City, Missouri; eight grandchildren and fourteen great-grandchildren. Preceding her in death was a son, Lester Coughlin, a son-in-law, Sonny Zetmeir, a brother and two sisters.
A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, May 28, 2016, at the Larned Cemetery, Larned.
