Jetmore - LeRoy Joe Sonday, 60, died July 25, 2006, at Hodgeman County Long Term Care Center, Jetmore, after a long battle with cancer.
He was born February 23, 1946, at Hays, the son of Roy Edward and Vera Blanche Butler Sonday. He moved with his parents to Dodge City as a young boy.
He graduated from Ford High School, Ford, Ks and attended Goodland Vo-tech and Dodge City Community College. He served in the United States Army for 2 years. He was an Airborne Ranger and a Chemical Staff Specialist during his tour of duty. He worked at Harry's Crank Shop, Speed King, Montezuma Co-op and owned and operated his own electrical business, known as LeRoy's Electric. He moved with his family to Ensign, Kansas in 1974. He farmed northeast of Cimarron for the past 20 years and has lived near Jetmore since 2001. He attended the united Presbyterian Church, Jetmore, and was a member of the Moose Lodge, Dodge City. LeRoy loved to dance! He belonged to the Pairs and Squares-Square Dance Club and was an avid country-western dancer.
On September 14, 1968 he married Linda Ratzlaff, at Dodge City, They later divorced. On March 19, 2005 he married Opal Demoret Eichman at Jetmore. She survives.
Other survivors include: three sons, Billy and wife Cheri, Bruce Dodge City. Brian, Cimarron; two-step daughters. Corrine Torrez and Kenda Mariche, Jetmore, one step son, Kevin Eichman, Dodge City; a brother, Kenneth Sonday; a sister, Vera Miller and husband Don, Dodge City; 3 grandchildren, Bryce, Kolby and Caitlyn; 9 step grandchildren, and 5 step great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a step granddaughter.
Funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at the United Presbyterian Church, Jetmore, with Rev. Mitch Reece and Rev. Jerry Hodges presiding. Friends may call from 9a.m. to 8p.m. Thursday at Beckwith Funeral Home, Jetmore. Burial will be in the Fairmount Cemetery, Jetmore with Military Graveside Rites preformed by American Legion Post 290.
