Obituary

Steven M. King, 33, of Jetmore, KS completed his final sprint car race on Wednesday, August 9, 2006. King died from injuries sustained during a sprint car accident at the Knoxville Raceway in Knoxville, Iowa. King died doing what he loved best - sprint car racing. King was born May 17, 1973 in Dodge City, KS.

King, who was also a farmer and rancher, was a graduate of Jetmore High School, where he was an All State Football Player and Kansas State University, where he earned a Bachelors of Science in Animal Science.

King had been racing sprint cars since1989. He was a two-time National Championship Racing Association (NCRA) 360 Sprint Car Series Champion (2002 & 2003) and had earned top 10 season honors within NCRA 10 out of the last 11 years. He had 17 career NCRA feature wins, making him the second most winning driver in the history of the series. At the time of his death, King was second in the 2006 point standing.

On the same night as his accident, King had earlier set a Knoxville Raceway track record for the fastest 10 laps raced. King was also the 2004 Hutchinson Nationals Champion.

Besides racing and farming, King was a member of Kansas Farm Bureau and was involved in various community activities. His latest efforts had focused on bringing an ethanol plant to the county.

He is survived by his parents, Daniel and Naomi King of Jetmore, sister Danette King Amstein, her husband Todd and nephew and niece, Jarod and Erin Amstein, of Statesville, NC, grandmother, Helen A. King, of Dodge City, KS and girlfriend, Tristine Hamilton of Jetmore.

A celebration of Steve's life will take place on Monday, August 14th, at 2 p.m. at the United Methodist Church in Jetmore, KS. Visitation will be from 9:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Sunday at the Beckwith Funeral Home. Burial will be in the Fairmount Cemetery, Jetmore, KS. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to the Steve King Memorial Fund. Donations may be sent to the Beckwith Funeral Home, P.O. Box 663, Jetmore, KS 67854. Family and friends may gather at the King Center in Jetmore following the burial. Family requests casual attire for the funeral. Racing t-shirts are welcomed.
