Velma Beatrice Hewson's Obituary
Larned – Velma Beatrice Hewson, 84, died December 3, 2007 at Larned Health Care and Living Center, Larned.
She was born August 19, 1923 at Larned, the daughter of Joseph P Rishel and Elizabeth J. (Lizzie) Brown, Velma grew up at Ash Valley and attended Woodrow School, which was a two room school in Ash Valley. She was a member of the Pleasant Hill Methodist Church. She drove to Larned from Ash Valley to attend high school. After graduating from Larned High School in 1941, she worked at the Pawnee County Courthouse as a secretary in the Farm Extension Office.
Velma loved 4-H. She was a 4-H member growing up and a Gem Dandys' community leader as an adult. She was a lifetime member of the Pawnee County 4-H foundation and received the Pawnee County 4-H Alumni Award in 1987. Velma's children and grandchildren were active in 4-H. She never missed one of their events. She would be so proud to know that her oldest great-grandchild has just recently joined a 4-H club.
On January 27, 1949 she married Glenn E. Hewson at the Larned Christian Church parsonage. He died August 28, 1987. Glenn and Velma made their home northwest of Larned, where he was a farmer and she was a homemaker. She was a member of the Larned United Methodist Church. One of her greatest joys was volunteering at the Methodist Church Budget Shop.
Survivors include: two sons Galen Glenn Hewson and wife Rita, Larned, Gary Floyd Hewson and wife Marsha, Columbia, South Carolina; a daughter, Elizabeth Jane Jackson and husband, Bob, Acworth, Georgia; seven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, a granddaughter, Gina Jackson, two brothers, Floyd Rishel, Carl Rishel, two sisters, Viola Parrish, and Ferne Fox.
Funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, December 8, 2007 at the Beckwith Mortuary Chapel, Larned with Pastor Ryan Webster presiding. Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday and Friday at the mortuary. Burial will be in the Larned Cemetery, Larned. After the graveside service the family would like to invite friends for lunch and fellowship at the Larned Assembly of God Church, 921 Broadway, Larned.
