William "Will"
Howard Thompson
March 15, 2012 – August 22, 2025
William Howard "Will" Thompson, 13, of Hanston, passed away August 22, 2025, at Wesley Medical Center, Wichita, as the result of injuries sustained in a car accident.
He was born March 15, 2012, in Hays, Kansas, the son of Daniel Gene Thompson and Heather Lynn (Rose) Thompson. A student at Hodgeman County High School, Will was full of curiosity, energy, and kindness.
Will was endlessly curious and creative, with a special interest in STEM projects, building robots, flying drones, and playing chess. He was happiest when he was discovering something new, whether it was teaching himself Japanese or taking things apart just to see how they worked and figuring out how to put them back together again—sometimes even in working order. He also loved being outdoors, especially when he was hunting or fishing, enjoying the quiet and the challenge that came with both.
Will had a gift for friendship and made friends everywhere he went. From school and summer camps to sports and community events, he formed connections easily. He had friends in towns all over, and his easygoing nature and sense of humor made him someone people were drawn to and remembered.
Above all, his greatest joy was working beside his dad on the farm. Harvest was his favorite season, and he rarely missed a chance to ride along, lend a hand, or learn something new. This year he was especially proud to be trusted as the grain cart driver, a responsibility he took on with determination and pride. Will also treasured "coffee time" with his dad at the local co-op each morning, visiting with other farmers, catching up on the latest gossip, and seeing what everyone was up to. He often talked about how he wanted to take over the family farm one day, and he was already learning what it would take to make that dream a reality.
Survivors include his parents Dan & Heather Thompson; a brother, Wyatt Austin Thompson, and a sister, Annabeth Morgan Thompson, both of Hanston; his cousin, Morgan Odessa Smith of Emporia; two aunts, Lindsey Ann Rose of Larned and Stacy Marie Rose of Emporia; and numerous other family members and friends who held him dear. He was preceded in death by his grandparents, William Lloyd Rose and Gaynell Ann Rose.
Memorial service will be 10:00 a.m. Saturday, November 15, 2025 at Faith Fellowship Church, Hanston, with Pastor Doug Ellison presiding. Inurnment will follow in Brown's Grove Cemetery, Burdett.
Memorials may be given to Hodgeman County 4-H or Family Outdoor Recreation, in care of Beckwith Mortuary, P.O. Box 477, Larned, KS 67550. Personal condolences may be left at www.beckwithmortuary.com.
